Sometimes a simple answer is all they need. Anything other than, "I don't know."
I personally would just love to hear all the other thoughts that he doesn't say out loud! What a curiosity and imagination he has!
Had Daniel recently seen your old copy of Splash with Daryl Hannah? Kids definitely come up with interesting things. It sounds like you handled that well. I always appreciated a good response rather than someone making me feel silly.
